cam design, rollers can have more aggresive profiles and are more efficient and yes non-roller blocks can be converted

First off, its Flat Tappet, they have flat lifters as the name describes and generally dont stay open as long, and pollers have roller ends, and broader lobes allowing for longer valve duration, ive also heard that if the lobe angles on the flat tappet are too steep they can be notched by the lifters. I see no reason that a non roller couldnt be converted, but it requires taking everything off short of the heads...

well im prolly starting with a short block from the junkyard, but im looking at 4 or 5 differant motors at a pull a part place all in lincolns or vics 3 are efi with the backwards looking intake and 2 are tbi or carbbed and which ever has the best comp is the winner. i didnt have all my tools when i whent today but im going to crank the engines over by putting a socket on the crank, and this way i can test the comp on all 8 cylinders and know it doesnt have a broken rod before i spend half the day removing everything off the block, i dont want the intakes or anything so a short block is ideal, but i wanted to get the best one from the get go, so to convert to a roller what has to be all changed???

i would like to suggest that if you are building a block up, you should look into build a 351w more benificial and its cost around the same. read this it might change your mind http://www.freewebs.com/vristang/fox351wswapfaq.htmif you havent changed your mind to answer your question about converting a non roller to a roller the easiest way is to use these http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=skuand they're not exactly cheap

I just read your signature and it seems you are familar with the 351w so disregard this post unless you still find it useful

lol!!! hahaha and i ruined the most costly part on the 351 too, the oil pan when it threw the rod! i got the motor for free . i wasnt really inpressed with it, but i didnt use a 5speed, but with a auto tranny i didnt like it much,
holy crap that cost too much for lifters!!!im going to make sure i get a roller cam motor to start with. i have a older flat tappet 302 but it broke off that funny half moon deal on the bottom of the cylinder wall, and im not sure its usable now, but it just needs a piston and rod i geuss

That part is the only thing you need to convert a flat tappet to a roller?

well you need to the cam too i suppose, and mayber different rods, but those are rollers and the are connected so you dont neec the dog bone and spider tray i think. when you buy the linked rollers you have to get the retro fit ones
