Hard starting
Hi all! Just joined up and this is my first post!
I have an 84 GT with the 2 barrel TBI unit. It won't start unless I pump the gas pedal and hold it open slightly. If I crank it without touching the throttle, it just cranks and cranks. If I open the throttle just a little, it's starts right up, idles fine and has plenty of power. It does smellrich though (but just at start-up). Lots of black smoke once it's running, but that clears out quickly. Within the last week, I put new plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil on, butstill have the same problem. Could it be the TPS? Timing? Any ideas wherego next?[8D]
Thanks!
Brian

RE: Hard starting
hermmm smells rich aye??
kinda of sounds like a breathing problem...i would checkexhaust and intake?hows the[air filter] lookin?? would hurt to check the pcv valve.
does it have an 02 sensor? may want to check that as well
if the throttle position sensor is off the service engine light should be thrown.

RE: Hard starting
is it a stock engine? 82 mustangs are carbs.86 was the first fuel injected stang.post some pics, the 82s are a cool lookin 4 eye.and i think it had a mechanical fuel pump.
ORIGINAL: BADGT350
I'm not at home right now, so I can't look, but since it's fuel injected, wouldn't it already have an electric pump? Not a manual pump?

RE: Hard starting
It's an 84 GT350 Anniversary Edition convertible with 2 barrel fuel injection (looks alot like a GM tbi), 302, auto trans. All stock. Just got it a few weeks ago from the 2nd owner. From what I've found, the automaticgt350's got the 2V fuel injection, the5 speeds manuals hadthe4V carb. I'm new to this, but I'veseen that stated on a few different sites.
No check engine light, I'll see ifthere's any stored codes in there anyway. Air filter is new, throttle body has been cleaned out too. I will check the pcv valve and it does havean O2 sensor. I've got aMAC manifold back exhaust system (h-pipe with cats and cat back)on order, so that will help in the breathing area.Might as wellreplace theO2 sensors while I'm under there.
Could the coolant temp sensor cause hard starting? The guage pegs when the key is on, so that's on the replace list too.
I'llsnap some pics when I get home tomorrow.
Thanks!
