Default oil pump

well i have the notorious pressure drop at idle, so i wanna do something about it. i wanna do a high flow pump, and all that jazz, but i remember a while back reading a thread where someone had posted a downside to high volume oil pumps, and i was wondering if anyone knew, cuz i cant find the thread.

this wasnt it was it?
I've heard that with a high volume pump you can suck all the oil out of the sump and lose pressure. A lot of people actually run stock or stock replacement pumps. Just put in a new stock replacement when you do rebuild or even have the engine out. I've also seen some high volume pumps twist the oil pump driveshaft and snap it off. Stock should do just fine.
Also found that- high vol. pump twist the pump driveshaft...

Default RE: oil pump

My recent mustang purchase came with the notorious oil pressure drop at idle, and a really cool knock knock knock. It also came with a junk yard 302HO & a bunch of new parts, one of which was a new melling high volume oil pump. Upon installing the Melling HV oil pump on the junk yard motor I.........(learned the hard way) it had a clearence problem. It is a little taller than the stock. (yes, I measured & don't remember the specs) Anyway, when I torqued the oil pan down, after I was done I saw a split in the corner of the pan.......It was the pump! I had to beat out the crease & weld the pan and gring down the corner bolt of the pump & all is fine now. I guess I got lucky with the junk yard motor as it runs great & the factory oil pressure gauge is Always 5/8 of the way up. The previous owner put a newer style (Ford) pan & pick-up tube on recently before I bought it. Hope this helps.

thanks for that response BOOKEM, i was thinking about a 7qt pan during the pump install, you've now sealed that deal.
90lxstanger: i think the remedy to that would be a high volume oil driveshaft.
