Power Steering pump replacement

Power Steering pump replacement
Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone in here has ever replaced their power steering pump and how hard it was. How many bolts are there? Is there anyway to take off the pump without taking off the whole bracket that it's attached to? I haven't taken a real good look at it, I was just wondering. My pump is whining real loud and I think it's about time I replaced it. The fluid in it is also black. I just wanted to get some more info on this possibly from someone who had done it before. thanks

just replaced mine the other day. 3 bolts, 2 lines. you're gonna need a pulley puller/installer too. really easy, just take the pulley off first, there's no need to take the bracket off.

RE: Power Steering pump replacement
ok first off, MOST older Ford pumps whine like a motha. Even your new or remanned pump might whine. As for removing it, I believe theres a total of 3 bolts and 2 nuts you need to remove. I believe 2 of em go through the A/C bracket and one is on the bottom.Disconnect the lines, plug the return line with a screw driver or something. Wrap a plastic bag around the feed line and wrap with a rubber band to keep it from leaking all over the place. Remove pump from vehicle. Youll need to remove the pulley, which is a press fit, youll need a special tool to do this as you need to reuse the pulley on the replacement pump, the tool is also used to re-install the pulley. There are 3 bolts that hold the pump to the bracket, remove, bolt up new pump. Read any paperwork that comes with the new pump, as it might have some special instructions they want you to follow so you dont void their warranty.
Then simply reverse the procedure. Once its all installed, fill with new ATF, raise the front end of the car, start the car, top off the fluid as neccessary, crank the steering wheel lock to lock several times. Check the fluid and top off.
-P.
PS: Im not sure if there is a drain plug on the rack itself if you wanted to change all of the fluid. And BTW, my 85 still has the original fluid from the factory in it. It literally looks like mud.
