Default Fuel Gage Problem

My fuel gage reads above full until my tank gets to about 1/8 full, then it starts to drop at the rapid rate landing on "E"! Anyone know what the problem is? Could it be the sending unit? It has been doing this for as long as I have had the car so its not that big of a problem butits time to start doing smoe work to my pony. Thanks for any help.

Just for reference, that variable resistor is actually a "resistor card". Its a circuit board with stripes of conductive film on it. For some reason, even to this day, Ford is notorious for having issues with them. I used to work for the company that made the fuel tanks for the Excursion and Ford GT. The GT uses a piezometric (pressure sensing) circuit that works even worse than the old cards! Also used 2 monster fuel pumps with 4 pickups on a giant stainless spine. VERY cool...
