Hey, I'm a pilot and I can't remember how to use the old E6B slidewheels. I've been so used to using computerized flight planners that I never even touch the htings anymore.
I SCUBA dive too and can barely remember how to use a dive chart / dive tables. Again, i just use a computerized one, lol.

I could use an old E6B and take an hour to plan a flight, or I could use a computer and do it in about 5 min. Tough decision

As far as "being prepared" I used to buy that line of crap too. They said that was why pilots needed to learn to use the slidewheel E6B. And that is why divers needed to learn to use the old plastic dive tables. But I found that it doesn't seem to work that way, lol. If your handheld dies, get more batteries or buy a spare and keep it with you. MUCH cheaper that way. LoL
But I guess they still ahve to teach the basics so that you can learn what the computer is doing when you ask it to take a measurement (as if we care what it's doing, as long as it does it.)

RE: micrometer
I work with quite a few guys who refuse to use digital calipers/mics.
I don't get that at all. In the lab we have more digital equipment than the old stuff, but these guys are always fighting over and looking for the old mics.
Personally, I have not touched the old mics since I left manual machining. Never even used one incnc machine class.
I guess my point is that some pretty stupid things are still being taught to students. Time wasted if you ask me.
Then there are the 'old timers' who don't want to learn a new way fo doing things, even if they could finish quicker while making their work more accurate.
Sorry I can't help you read the mic, but it's your homework anyway
