help troubleshoot 5.0L timing
This weekend I'm going to pick up an 89 lx. I'm told it was an original 4 cyl, that was converted to a 5.0L with a 1988 motor. The owner says that the engine fires right up, but it runs rough. His friends say that the timing is off, due to the mass air flow, could this be it? I'm no master tech, but I would think that the timing would be more mechanically related than just the maf, maybe the camshaft is flat? I'm just wondering what ANY possible causes could be. i'm going to get the car on sunday, so that night or the next day I'll start checking it out. All replies welcome. thanks all.

RE: help troubleshoot 5.0L timing
earlier today i worked on a 2002 s-10 and it had a bad MAF and it was runing like timing was way off. truble code said multible cylinder misfire (p0300) so we started with cap, rotor, wires and plugs, did no fix so we moved to the Maf and that was the problem. i know this is a chevy but i think it is relivent to the situation.

RE: help troubleshoot 5.0L timing
could be aolot of things to make a car run ruff. Usally its the basic thing, wires,Plugs ,timing etc. Check those first. Also not very many 88 mustangs came with Mass air so check to make sure. good luck

RE: help troubleshoot 5.0L timing
that's what i was thinking before. I don't know if this 88 motor was set up with mass air or speed density, but i think the 89 lx would be set up for it, even though it was an original 4 cyl. does that sound right? wouldn't the motor have to comply with the body somehow with the mass air? or would it all just be a matter of the motor, nothing to do with the body?

RE: help troubleshoot 5.0L timing
sounds like this car has been sitting for some time to me. i would first pull and check the spark plugs and replace them if needed. then check the distributor cap and rotor and replace if needed. same with the plug wires too. then I would check and set the timing. also add some fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank and get some fresh gas in it and see what all this does to affect the engine running.
