Alternator to the cluster????

Alternator to the cluster????
I have a 6g Alternator in a 1991 GT.
Does the cluster have to be plugged in for the alternator to charge? I have a schematic but not sure if the wire goes around the cluster or through the bulb to the ignition.
I ran the 4Gauge from the post on the alt. to the (+)side of the battery.
I used the supplied D Plug for the yellow and green/red wires.
When I test voltage(ignition on) the yellow wire is same volts as the battery However when I test voltage on the green/red wire it is 0...?
And so I have no charge going to the battery....
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks in Advance
