87 over fueling

87 over fueling
I just had a 87 given to me. I got the car running put it over fuels at idle. It smokes black badly and you can smell raw fuel. It smokes bad enough that it only takes a few minutes to smoke the shop up. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions what to check first. I was thinking the fuel pressure regulator

RE: 87 over fueling
I would check the compression on each cylinder. Could be a cracked piston ormessed up valvemakeing it not compress the fuel to burn it. Would smoke bad/ smell like raw fuel. Just a quick would rule this guess out. Also check you fuel pressure that would answer you own question. Like i said its a guess but something i would check.

well if its still speed density, make sure there is still a vac line running to your MAP sensor. if it is rotted or cracked, it will send false readings to the ECM and your car will run higher in your VE tables. which will make the car use more fuel.

RE: 87 over fueling
Thank you for that i went out and looked at it and the vacum line that runs to the map was spliced into the fuel regulator i unspliced them and ran seperate lines and it ran much better it still smoked a little but i think that might have been left over from running it before. This car was given to me because the guy could not get it running he had rebuilt the engine but never got it started. I found the distributor was off. I fixed the timming and got it runnong but it was too rich. It is an 87 conv the body is good just needs the paint refreshed and the frame is solid thanks again
