break in a motor procedures
I have a rebuilt 331 motor. Before I start it up I know I have to use conventional motor oil and prime the motor. I have a roller cam.
Is there a special procedure breaking in the motor with a roller cam. Do I have to rev the motor to 1500 rpm for 20 mintues?
Also will the stock distributor gear work with a roller cam? I know you have to use a steel distributor gear with a roller and a iron gear with a flat tappet cam.

RE: break in a motor procedures
revving the motor for 20mins is for tappet cams not roller cams.
to seat the rings properly. warm the engine up
then drive it hard with no constant rpms or low rpm bogging loads
for about 30mins.
Let it cool down completely and repeat two more times
You're done.
DO NOT baby a new engine or let idle for hours
Rings need to flogged on a bit to seat properly and to score
the cylnider walls properly.

So, after I start the motor, check/adjust timing, fuel pressure, verify that there are nofluid leaks, oil pressure, water temp and everything looks good, after the engine has warmed up to operating temperature, I then drive it like i stole it for 30 mintues, let it cool for 30 mintues than repeat the process 2 more times.
Should I go wot from a standstill to redline?

I would not go to redline but don't be afraid to rev it up 5000 or so. Don't spin tires and also let off the gas and allow the engine to slow you down I.E. Not using brakes. Do different gears like 2nd from 20 to 60 WOT. Print out that article that I told you about and follow it. It's not a bible but a GREAT guide to follow!

RE: break in a motor procedures
i try not to beat the crap outta them until the oil has been changed a couple times and it has some miles on em - but everything else sounds about right to me. ie, changing oil at like 10-20 miles, then 100-200, then 1000, then every 3000. varying rpms is good, excessive idling bad, etc, etc
