As for handling more TQ: The lower 2.95 1st gear is part of the reason for that. The Astro tranny as well as the Z-spec bothhave the same 1st gear, although the A-5's gears are beefier. MM&FF actually had an article last month or this month (IIRC) that compares the A-5 gears to stock.
Here's the info for the A-5 tranny from Astro's web site....

RE: best 5 speed or 6 speed for the buck
I sent an email to Astro yesterday about pricing/packages. Here is the reply I got:
Have a Package very similar to the G-Force Package we used to offer. However, we are now making our own Gear Kits to install into the T-5 Casings, which are known as the "A-5".
Package#1:
$1,995.00
Includes "A-5" Transmission (425 Torque/550HP), Mcleod 800 Series Clutch Kit, 2 Quarts of Synergyn Syngear II Transmission Fluid, and Freight of the Package to Customer.
Package does require a Core be exchanged in for one built. If Core is sent in after taking receipt of Reman. T-5, a Core Charge of $250.00 will be applied, plus the Freight to get the Core back to our Warehouse. The Return Freight is where Astro "prints" out a Shipping Label and includes it in the box so that the customer can return their core in the same box/packing material. Hopefully the above answers your questions.
Thanks,

FWIW, this is the route I'd take, hands down, if I had the cash and needed a new tranny (just had my Zspec rebuilt ). They've always been really helpful and have great customer service; in fact, much better than D&D from my experience.
