5.0 motor differences
if your running EFI you'll need to keep the same firing order or your injectors wont be giving fuel at the right time..... if your carb'd you just change the cam (which changes firing order) and your good to go.
other than that - early motors were 2 piece rear main seal motors with a 28oz balance on the harmonic balancer and flywheel, in the early 80's they went to a 1 piece seal and a 50oz balance. this is when hyd. roller cams came into the picture, everything prior was still hyd. flat tappet
1986 motors have different pistons without valve reliefs and the heads were garbage, and at some point the HO motors had forged pistons (late 80's early 90's i dont know the exact year)
pre 85 heads suck, 85 heads are hit or miss depending on which vehicle the motor came out of, 86 heads sucked, and 87 - up were the best of the litter.
