yeah it could be alot of things but like stated before even though .480 lift cam will work with stock springs you shouldnt be revving it very high or you will float valves

so if i get the gt40(non-p) heads with a 480 spring, should i upgrade? or just leave the 480 spring....i think i remmeber hearing you need some clearance...if so what size of spring?

I went w/ a Crane valve spring kit good to .550 lift for my E cam (.498 lift). Get more spring than you need by .20 or so to make sure they won't bind.
