Default backfiring when decellerating

i just got a 88 mustang gt that had sat for 2 years. i have ran 4 tanks of premium through it. when i let off the gas or roll out of it, and it is slowing down it pops really bad not as bad as a big backfire but its close. i have timed the engine in too. do i need ot do plugs and a fuel filter?

u should do that anyways but alot of cars do this if the cats are gutted or exaust has been changed its un burnt fuel in the pipes igniting cus the car is moving faster than the engine wants to and raw fuel is being sent out the exaust...usually, see whats up with the exaust... is it still stock???

backfires during deceleration is a symptom of a bad timing chain

ya its hooked up.

Check the plastic vaccum tubes that go to the smog check valve and diverter valves. If they are broken or not hooked up, thecheck valves will allowthe smog pumpto push air into the exhaust during deceleration and cause the backfires.
