Default NEED ADVISE: Installing new headers

I just bought some shorty headers for my '92 mustang 5.0, If I have the proper tools, can I install them myself, or should I take the car to a mechanic since I have never done this before?

If I can do it myself, do you have any advise or tips before I install them?

its pretty easy...when i was installing my mac equal length shorties the steering colum got in the way and i had to take it out to get them in.....but my motor mounts were also shot so my engine wasnt sitting quite right...its easy. the resto of the system is a bitch to do unless you can weld....

you would have a hard time getting a mechanic willing to do it, for fear the bolts wil break off and they will have to pull the engine to remove the busted bolts of the bolt(s) out. make sure you use some penetrating substance to free up the bolts if that doesn't work try letting them warm up by running the engine, just save yourself the hastle and dont try to manhandle them loose or you'll be kickin yourself for it...good luck!

i doubt the header bolts will break, just do it carefully and nothing should break hehe....

installing headers isnt so bad (coming from a guy who took 3 days to install long tubes) but now that i know how to do it i bet i could do a header swap in 3 hours... 2 hours for shorty.

yah i heard of those bolts breaking too. when i got my custom exhaust done i brought the guy some shorty hedmans and he started telling me all these excuses for not doin them. "theyll take an extra 2 hours to put in. the bolts might break on them and i dont want to be responsible" dumb ***. those bolt came off so easy and it took me about 10 minutes to take both headers off and put them bacl on. of course i beleived him at the time and i returned the hedmans but when i took my motor apart and it was time to take the headers off i was pissed that it was so easy

If your headers are un-equal length, its an easy swap. If you got equal length shorties, you have alittle more work to do. I have the BBK equal with the flange, I had to jack up the motor a couple of inches, remove the dipstick, and modify the egr hoses. Everything needed was included in the kit. You'll also have to tighten up the header bolts a couple times after the install, expansion and contraction with the engine heating up and cooling down lossens the bolts some. Don't forget to remove the spark plugs before the install, it'll make it easier.
