Why is the 96-98 Explorer 5.0 weaker than a 94/95 GT? Intake? CR? Tune? Cam? Exhaust?
Hey everyone I was just checking out the specs for 96-98 Explorers with the 5.0L in them.
Here is what I found
1995 Mustang GT: 215hp / 288tq
1995 Mustang Cobra: 240hp / 285tq
1996: 210hp / 280tq
1997: 211hp / 274tq
1998: 215hp / 288tq
1999: 215hp / 288tq
2000: 215hp / 288tq
2001: 215hp / 288tq
I take it the GT40-P head startred in 98 and spanned through 01?
Now what I dont get is if the head is so much better than the stock 94/95 GT head then why isnt it making what the cobra made(240hp/285tq)?
And can this be brought back up by simply using a thinner head gasket to raise the CR and general Mustang performance equip?
Basicly, If this same engine were dropped into a Mustang and had the same CR (assuming it doesnt, I dont know if it does) as the Cobra and used all the accessories as the Cobra would it have 240hp?
Also how sound are the internals? What are they made from?
Is there any problems that should be addressed with these engines before adding performance peices to them?
Thanks everyone.

That would make a lot of sense.
The Explorer is an HO if an, that is if HO's are Roller cams, then yes, its an HO.
Sorry guys I havnt been messing around with 5.0L stuff for a couple years now, I have actually been focused on 3.8/4.2L V6 and my 5.3L Mod Monster build.

95' Mustang Mach 1 281 manual - Penny -
Not a 1995 Mach 1....geez can't ya read?
Anyway, the Explorers had a mild cam for low RPM torque and a milder tune.
I'm not really sure why though, because the Mustangs had plenty of low rpm grunt along with more power up top.
Gotcha.
As for my sig (I explain this at least 4 times a week)
I bought a 2003 Mach1 front clip, it was a Ford Crash test car, had 0 miles on it and the front clip I got was perfect.
I am using everything from the heads up on the project, the shortblock is a 96-98 5.3L stroker. I am selling the 0-mile Mach1 shortblock because I prefer the 96-98 aluminum block over the 03/04 WAP aluminum block.
The interior is being swapped over to a complete Mach1 charcoal interior including dash, guages, wiring, the trans is a TR3650 for now but will eventually upgrade to a TKO-600. When I can find the custom 94-98 Mach1 shaker hood then I will install the shaker. I would prefer glass but I havnt seen it made in glass, so I will just paint over it.
There is a long list of other mods that I am doing to this.
Basicly think of what a Mach1 would look like if it were made in 1995. Thats what I am going for.

So going over to something like an E303 cam will bump me way up there power wise?
The reason why I am asking is because my engine isnt done yet, the shortblock is still in Canada and I cant get ahold of Boss330 to do my heads, their voice mail goes to a full mail box... Really ****ty.
My mustang isnt running right now and I can get ahold of a 96+ explorer 5.0L for $250 as a longblock, I would just have to get everything else off a GT to make it work. I have my choice of GT40 and GT40-P heads on the engine.
I hate seeing my mustang collect dust in storage so I would like to at least drop this in while I dump damn near $10k into this engine, I am already $4.5k deep into it.
To give you an idea of how long I have been on this project, I bought the front clip 3 years ago.
I dunno its probably more now, I havnt been keeping track of the cash. All I know is that I havnt driven my car for 3 years now, I just want to get something in it.
The engine and Maximum Motorsports Max-Grip are the last stages of this project and the engine is damn close to being done. (Damn close for me is like another year.)

I have been working on my wifes 3 mustangs for freakin ever now and I only get to see mine once a month when I pay the storage fee.
My wife just got a new 351C CJ and a new C6 trans with a B&M shift kit in it, she traded her car hauler for it.... Thats going into her 71' Mach1 while the stock 351C 4V and trans are rebuilt (She is big on numbers matching) Her new CJ puts out 350hp with just a damn cam and Hooker Super Comp headers.... Everything else was rebuilt to spec (Forged rods and pistons too.) When she gets her weiand on there and a Demon she will going to skyrocket over 400hp.....
Im not happy for her, its awesome that she was able to get such a baddass engine, I mean hell the stock 351C 4V in 71 would make damn near 350hp with just a carb change and headers. These engines just respond so freakin awesome to flow improvments.
Just to give you an idea of stock power levels.
351C CJ was 280hp 4bolt main (4V heads)
351C 4V was 285hp 2 bolt main.
They were really really restricted down back in the day, lol its really funny how they did that. They tamed it for everyone that didnt want the power and gas bill but like the looks but made it possible to produce over 400hp with simple bolt ons and a Cam.
When I worked at pick-n-pull I had a manager named John there who had a 72' Torino with a rebuilt 351C CJ. He was a stock bottom end rebuild stock 4V heads. It had a decent cam (around .510") and an aluminum high rise intake with Super Comp headers.
He said when he dyno'ed it he got about 415rwhp out of that thing.
I never saw a Dyno sheet so it was really hard for me to believe that, but he wasnt one to lie... He was the quite responsible type.
So... What were we talking about agian?
LOL
