what are some signs that a car might be running too lean?

Check your plugs. Make sure that they aren't burnt. Check it with an a/f gauge. Why do you ask?

A blown head gasket ora shattered piston are two good signs. If you hear pinging at higher loads that's a pretty good sign as well. Of course, it's much easier to check your A/F ratio.
