i have a dumb question.
Is checking the codes when u go and have ur computer checked and see what it brings up? If so, do u only do this when the check engine light comes on, or will codes come up even if the check engine light is not on?

checking codes means hooking up a computer diagnostic scanner to your ecu, on fox bodie stang its in the back left corner of the firewall, you plug it in and read codes with the engine runnign and with it off, codes can definetly come up even if the check engine light isn't on.

On pre-96 (pre OBDII) you can pull codes manually, meaning you don't need a code reader. You have to jumper the DLC (Data Link Connector), at the moment I don't have the info to tell you which pins to jumper.
Fords store codes in three places, Key On Engine Off, Key On Engine Running, and Continuous Memory. KOEO/KOER codes are 'hard' codes meaning they are happening right now, Continuous Memory contains stored codes or 'soft' codes, meaning, it's happened but may not be happening right now.

This spring talked about previous. Might be my problem on my 89 vert. 1st to 2nd shift normally but 2nd to 3rd too early and rpms drop to almost 450-500. Any opinions????? Fluid normal color, no burnt smell.
