351 has higher deck height, 289 and 302 are essentially same block. Most parts are interchangeable except lower intake. Build a 302 for what u want. It would be way too much work to put a 351 in ur car just to run 12's.

Just work with your 302, that'd be the cheapest way and you can get into the 12s with no problem at all.

I always say to stay away from 351W as it will be 70+ pounds more than a 5.0 and that will all be on the front of a car that is already way to heavy in the front......
5.0 all the way.............

My car is pretty budget friendly. Cam was $250, lifters $100, gt40p heads $650 (including machine work), trickflow intake used $300, heads and h pipe used $225, Drag radials $350

So pretty much I have a 12 second car for $1875. You could keep it a lot more budget friendly too. There are much cheaper cams out there but I was stuck with a speed density friendly cam. You can get gt40p heads pretty cheap. A used good set of slicks can be had for $150. You can also put a 125 shot on a stock car with good tires and go mid 12's.

well if your only option is to get a new motor id say go with a 351w. they are heavier but can handle a lot more hp with stock internerals and create more torque and hp over the stock 5.0. My 351 put down more whp untuned then a 5.0 has at themotorwith just an intake and basic 650cfm carb andexhaust and put down a godly amount of torque. I payed maby 1500 max for the complete swap, gained a ton of power and with the right heads and cam you could easily be pushing 350whp and 450 foot pounds. just look at rbarn.

289 and 302 are the basic same block. The 289 had a shorter stroke.
The 351W is basically a 302 with about a 1 inch taller deck and a larger diameter crank. so a 302 oil pan will not work on a 351.
The heads and most of the bolt ons (Timing Cover, Valve covers etc,) are the same.

Due to the taller deck the intake manifold is wider. The firing order on the 351 is different but only because they used a different cam so the cam out of a 302 will work in a 351 and visa-versa.

On the small block family of ford. The smaller 289 actually was better for 0-60 times than the 302. As your stroke gets longer you rev times increase. Also if you can find a rebuildable 289 block. You will find that the have a higher nickle content which makes that last longer. Cast Iron wears faster than nickle. So the more nickle you have mixed in with your cast iron the better. Not all 289 have the high nickle content but most do.
