Default Reverse then nothing....Help

Hopefully one of you guys have seen this before. I have a 1992 Mustang GT, I figured since I was off today I would take it out. Went to the gas station, filled it up... put it in reverse backed up a little and then went to drive and its like there was nothing there, the shifter flows as free as can be, like nothing is attached cable wise or whatever method ford used. Sooo my stang is sitting up at a local gas station in reverse and will not do anything else.

the trans is an auto btw

Stranded mustang please help

is the transmission itself still in reverse, with the shifter showing drive?
if thats the case, the cable probably snapped somewhere. you can climb under the car and pull the shift lever forward two clicks, that will put you in drive

make sure someone is in the car pushing the brake, or pull your ebrake all the way up tight

yes, the trans is still in reverse, you can turn on the key and move it back and forth freely and still stays in reverse

yah, cable broke somewhere or it snapped off the shifter...
you are gonna have to crawl under there and move the shift arm to Drive yourself. 2 clicks from where it is.

Or he could be lucky... maybe the cable didn't actually break and instead, the bolt holding it rusted or snapped out. Of course, none of us are ever that lucky

Make sure you shift to park or neutral to start the car first, then put it in drive and get it home.

Definately, start checking where the shifter cable should connect as well as where the tranny cable should connect. The cable could have also snapped inside the plastic housing as well.
