paranoid question

changed my oil today, 10w-40 gtx high mileage with a bottle of lucas.

after driving for about a half hour, beating the bag out of it a little bit.. didnt bring it WOT but got it up to 4 grand.

i pull in the driveway, turn off the fan and figure i should check the oil while its warm. i know its gunna be hot but i pull the stick out and its smoking and the stick was probably 200 degrees, nearly burnt the skin right off my hand. it was so hot i dropped the damn thing.

temp gauge was reading at about 185F, and i turned the fan all the way up instead of turning it off so its gunna be on for a while.

is this normal? obviously oil gets warm but holy ****... im glad i still have skin left on my fingers.

well lets see, the oil runs on the side of the pistons and the top of the pistons experience over 1000* temps so it seems to me that the oil will get hot. never check oil when its hot because of the obvious but also because the oil hasnt dripped back to the pan yet so you will get a lower reading then whats accurate.

The dipstick runs right next to your header also...they get hot.

Oil is responsible for removing a tremendous amount of heat from the internal components of the engine, and runs about as hot as the coolant does(give or take)

weird!!! the oil should be really cold!! like u should stick ur tounge to it and it will stay.
