I've seen people do it and get away with it... but unless you install a return style system for the excessthen all you'll succed in doing is lowering a 35-40 psi pump to 5psi and in short order burn it up......been there done that!!!! best way is remove the pump and install a piece of tubling in it's place for a pick up and go buy the holley red or blue pump and install it at the rear because elec pumps work better as pushers not pullers

I'm in the middle of the swap right now actually. Change the pump, you get the added benefit of making sure your lines are good and knowing you have a new pump in there. That helps if you have problems down the road. If you have problems after the swap you'll know it's not the pump gone bad if you swap 'em. I used a good ol' 4-6 PSI carter in line.
