Power Steering Pump

Power Steering Pump
I'm a newbie here-I got my first stang a couple of weeks ago. Its an 86 with a 92 motor. Car has power steering-but needs new pump. I really dont care about the power steering being there or not. Right now i have a belt bypassing that anyway. If I want, can I just drive the car with the bad pump without any maechanical defects or problems. Cauz my boss at work (long time racer) said that with all the fluids in there it isnt really good to be driving with a abd pump and that eventually my steering box will go. he reccomends taking out the pump, capping the lines, and finding a manula steering box to replace it. Neone know if this is worth it or can i just drive it the way it is

RE: Power Steering Pump
Mustangs use a power rack and pinion steering system so they don't have a steering box, at least my '88 don't have one. you could remove the pump and disconnect/drain all the hoses and steel lines and drive it that way with no problems except it will be hard to steer without the power assist. you can also swap out the power steeering for a manual rack and pinion system too easy enough to get less effort at the steering wheel. Flaming River makes a real nice one for less than $300 bucks and I've got one of them now.

RE: Power Steering Pump
thanks alot. i figured i could run the car without the pump being in there or just leave it and have no mechanical problems if i did. my boss was probably used to his cars-69 gto all motor. probably had completely different setup. ill probably take the thing out to give me a little more room.
