Default rearend guru's

ive been having a problem with my rearend for a while now and its just getting worse the more i ignore it.

driving to the gas station i heard a noise so when i pull in i grab one of the rear wheels and pull it towards me. i heard the drum cover banging against the backing plate. the lugs are tight and the cover isnt cracked or anything.

today i put the car on the lift and u can get a good amount of play, enough to make the drums bang against the plate. the question is my rearend even worth putting money into? it has a pinion seal leak, the gears whine, and the fluid i changed not even 2 months ago looks like crap and there was metal fragments on the plug.

when i took the cover off before the c-clips were fine. i dont know what the problem is and this other noise just started. its a rubbing sound (tires arent hitting anything)

im scared because ive made nearly 20 drag strip passes with it like this

the bearings are probably shot, thats probably where the play and the metal shavings are coming from, as for the whine, you might need new gears or just rebuild the posi unit. im not the best at rearends, but i know enough. see if other ppl back me up on that.

If you have play in the wheels, that probably is bearings. The whine you hear is probably associated with the pinion gear sealleaking. If youhad done anything new to rear-end lately i would suggest you tighten your pinion nut. But you havnt said any thing about any work done to it lately. If you depend on this car for transportation, stop beating the hell out of it. Sounds like you need an overhaul. If you cant do it yourself, shop around for a good price on labor, so if you wait for it too break completely you will know where to get it towed. I would say get it looked at right away.

id let a shop do the pinion seal and bearings, you need a press and special adapter plates., now would be the time to upgrade gears if you want
