Default choked engine & back fires from the engine

sometimes the engine back fires from the passengers side and the car becomes heavier even if I step on the gas it feels like its choked and then in a sudden the engine starts working properly.
I've tried replacing the air flow meter with another one but yet I have the same problem.
in your opinion what would cause this?
my spark plugs are fine and the injectors were cleaned 4 months ago.

Check for codes.Im sort of having the same issues and still cant figure it out. When you step on the gas at about 2800-3300rpm,does it backfire once and take off?

1.Check the cat being clogged by removing that side's o2 sensor to leave a hole for exhaust to escape.

2.Check for intake manifold leaks, you can light a small paper towel on fire inside your airbox without the filter in place and close it, with the engine off, and throttle open to full, any smoke will come from leaking areas.

3.Inspect all vaccum lines.

4. Check your timing setting, if it jumps around instead of staying steady, you need a new timing chain.

5. Check fuel pressure and with a long bar, the injectors, listen for a bad one, they sound different than others

my car does the exact same thing.. and it took a couple weeks before I realized it only happend when I was under 1/4 tank of fuel and when I was making a right hand turn, I could also hear something sounded loose swinging around in the gas tank so my thought was my fuel pump was not bolted down or something but in the common problems thread someone mentioned something about the fuel tank baffle.. maybe you have a similar problem.
