Default Throwout bearing problems

I'm replacing a clutch at the time and i'm taking you guys up on some advice by replacing the throwout bearing also. It was a living hell getting that bastard off. I hammered the **** out of it and i finally got it off. I'm replacing the clutch fork as well b/c i'm afraid that it might be bent. I tried to slip the new bearing on and i'm finding that its not really that easy. Should you have to hammer the throwout bearing to get it on?? Should i put the clutch fork on the bearing then put them on togather? idk if i can get the fork over the bearing if i put the bearing on first. Lastly, do you have to have the pilot bearing pressed in or can i put a piece of wood over it and hammer it into the flywheel? Thanks guys

You shouldn't need to hammer the tob on, are you sure it's the right one? And yeah, the pilot bearing can be driven in with a piece of wood or a socket etc, but be careful not to damage it. And make sure you're using a bearing and not a bushing

has anyone ever had this problem? what does a pilot bushing look like compared to a bearing (what i have is metal and it swivels like a bearing would but i'm just lookin for verification)? is there like a flat or something so that i can slip this tob on? kindof a noob here so please help me out a little bit. Thanks

the tob should never have to be beat off like that. replace the bearing retainer that is attached to the trans its what the bearing slids on it bolts right off the front of the trans

If you had to hammer or chisel off the old bearing and hammer on the
new one, do yourself a favor and replace the transmission input bearing
retainer (the nose of the transmission, that the release bearing rides
on). The bearing is supposed to slide smoothly over the shaft and
it sounds like your old one is toast. A new 94 - 95 T-5
steel bearing retainer is about $70.

As for the pilot bearing, it sits in the tail of the engine crankshaft
- and the input shaft of the tranmission rides inside this
bearing. A pilot bushing performs the same task, but it doesn't
have the needle bearings, so the bushing is designed to slowly wear
away. <They both look like doughnuts>. Go with the
pilot bearing.....

Oh yeah, and while you have the transmission down, replace the rear
main oil seal on your engine; it's easy and it's right there.

If you only want to replace the input bearing retainer, no, because it's the front of the transmission.

You only have to remove the bell housing if you want to replace the pilot bearing and rear main seal.
