Default Head Install Tips

OK, for all of you DIYers out there I'm just seeking any tips, and or advice that can be offered when doing head swaps. By the end of this month, and or early next month, I'll be installing my GT-40 heads and intake and I'm just seeking, as stated, any tips that you guys may have that had done it yourself. In other words, if you ran into a problem, and know never to do that again, please share, or if you just know a quick way to do something, then let me know, or just have somethign that you'd like to share to watch out for. I'll be doing the swap mostly by myself, but I can seek people for help. This will be my first time tampering with the heads and fuel system, but is not my first time dealing with engine repairs and or work.

Thanks for any advice offered.

Not to sound corny, but pickup a copy of "Building High-Performance
Fox-Body Mustangs on a budget", yes I know you have a 95, but the book
covers the aluminum head swap, cam change, headers, upper and lower
intake and supercharger installation on a 1995 Stang.

Tips?

Degrease the engine WELL before you start.

Buy the fuel line disconnect tools (2 sizes for the inlet and return lines)

Consider doing the camshaft, timing set and new lifters, since you'll be breaking the motor down anyway.

Do the headers as well, if you haven't upgraded them already.

Roller rockers - have you considered them.

If you're swapping the intake, you'll be transferring over the old
sensors - it's time to check them all and replace any that look suspect.

Yeah, change the water pump, radiator and heater hoses too.

How do those injectors look? Clean? Good seals on those injectors?

I bought a "running parts car" but decided to keep it, because
everything worked (cold A/C, cruise control, etc.), then found out it
had a bad head gasket (leaking between cylinders 2 and 3 or 6 and 7, I
can't remember. Anyway, I found myself changing all of the above
after I decided that it was too much work to just replace the head
gasket on one side and mill one head. lol.

Just make sure you dont drop anything in the engine or intake try not to lay small bolts on the fenders andanyplace they can get knocked over in there if you put the lower on and it takes you a day or two to get to putting the upper intake on.take some duct tape or just painters tape and tape that sucker up.
one small bolt in there and all that hard work is ruined

before you start, take a few digital pictures of all your vacuum hoses, sensors, etc, so you know how it all goes back together. it only takes a second and it can get rid of a few headaches when you're putting everything back together.

Thanks for the replys, I forgot to mention, here's what I have planning to go in.

New timing cover gasket kit (stock is leaking)
New radiator (stock one is gone)
GT-40 iron block heads w/ 1.7" roller rockers (may change to alluminums at the last minute though)
GT-40 1" intake spacer
Complete intake and head gaskets
94 SVO Cobra intake manifold
90mm MAF
30lb fuel injectors
New header gaskets
75mm TB
New push rods

Secondary info
The water pump and water pump gaskets are fine
I've already cleaned most of the sensors on the top of the engine (minus the TPS)
I'm probably leaving the cam alone, the car idels like it already has a light cam in there
Car had new radiator hoses put in last year, about this time in fact, and yes, it's a completeGoodyear hose kit
Headers are new, as well as the whole exhaust, just need a new gasket there after the swap

There's also this one: http://www.allfordmustangs.com/techa...intakeswap.pdf That's the one i used as a guideline, i dont think it's perfect but it's pretty damn good. I'd suggest head studs over bolts, more money but I think it was worth it. Also using ARP assembly lube makes for more accurate torque readings.

Also just curious, what 90mm MAF are you using?
