Default Timing?????

I decided that I would check the timing on my Mustang, since I just picked it up a little bit ago. When I tried to time it, the light showed about 3* btdc, but moved around a little bit. I hooked up a compression gauge and found TDC on #1. The rotor points between 1 and 7 ( i cant remember exactly- the next one past 1 going counterclockwise- this is a H.O. motor). So should I pull the distributor and move it a couple of teeth so that it lines up right? I think the book said 10* ATDC is stock. How far can/should i go? Thanks for the help!
