Default Do I need a hardened gear on my non roller distributor?

Does a roller motor require a special distributor gear?

I've got an '85 distributor and want to use it in a E7 roller motor from a '90 HO stang.

Do I need a hardened gear on my non roller distributor?

Thanks

You need the hard gear with the Ford roller cam.
Some 85s were roller also. I know the Crown Vics were and I believe 85 was the first Mustang to get them.
Are you sure the 85 is not a roller? Truck engines were not.

Yes , I am sure the '85 is not a roller motor.

Can you tell if this gear is hardened? What is the identifying factor(s)?

You need a steel not cast iron gear . It will be smooth not textured like the cast iron one is .

if the dizzy is out of a non roller engine take the gear off your roller dizzy shaft and swap them.. I did it and it worked fine...I believe the dizzy shafts are the same size ..pending what dizzy you have... if it has play when to swap and slides on way to easy then go buy a steel gear

You could leave the gear alone and uprade your camshaft with a piece from Comp. Their hydraulic roller cams are compatable with the early iron dist. gears.

Something to think about...

FYI it depends if the car was manual or standard for the roller. Or so I've been told.
