A good magnet to lift them out of the bore, it's a lot easier than trying to grip the top end of an oiled up lifter. Just make sure you remove all the lifters BEFORE you remove the cam

I managed to get mine out with out a magnet, but its not like it will be an issue for him if he is not planning on swapping cams

I have never had a problem with oily (sp?) lifters. They have always just pulled right out without any problems.
