One screw on the left is hot and the screw on the right is ground. In my 87 the wire runs to the fuse box on number 8 I believe.
It is a 15 amp fuse. It also is the fuse for the dome light. So if your dome light is working then your fuse is good and your problem lies in the hot wire under the headliner. The wire on mine ran across the passenger side under the visor and down the "A" pillar. Then across the under the dash.

RE: map light woes...
Are you getting juice to your map light? My first map light went bad at the little pin switch. I took a soldering iron and touched the plastic nibs that hold the switch assembly in place and got it to work again.
