83 5.0 exhaust help
Hopefully someone can help me out. Im looking for a catback exhaust kit for my 83 5.0 LX. I cant find one for an 83 anywhere. I thought that the 87-93 kits might fit but it seems like the curves in the pipe wont match up.I could be wrong but I dont want to find out after I buy a kit.The mufflerson the 83 sitjust after the crossmember and itseems like the other kits sit before it. I needto replace everythingbehind the headers.Does anyone know where to get a kitthat will fit an 83.
Thanks,
Thanks,

RE: 83 5.0 exhaust help
You'll need to change the exhaust manifolds. Or take the H-pipe to a muffler shop and have them remake the down pipes. You should only have one muffler right now unless someone changed it out already. To go full dual you'll also need the drivers side hangars and a duoble hump crossmemeber from a later 5.0 stang.
Oops... sorry... no cat backs only. 83 has a single exhaust stock.

You will not find an exhaust system online for an '83. Are you staying with the current single exhaust setup? If you are then I would just take it to a shop and have them make you a y-pipe (with a cat welded in if needed)and aftercat setup and you can choose the muffler that you want welded in.
How To Convert To True Duel ExhaustOn A '79-'85 Mustang:
If you want to run duel exhaust then you can buy anexhuast setup online for '86-'93 mustangs which originally came with duel exhaust. To run the '86-'93 exhaust you will have to buy a duel hump transmission cross member, an h-pipe exhaust hanger and a duel exhaust hanger kit.All threeare sold at mustangsunlimited.com. You willalso have to bring the car to a muffler shop to have the supplied passenger side tailpipebracket welded into place as the car does not have screw holes on that side. This costs like $10. Lastly you will have to run an 86-'93 stock tubular exhaust manifold or an 86-'93 aftermarket header because the manifolds on your car will not fit, they are to small and the drivers side has a smog setup that will not work. So if you have to pass smog you might not want to go this route as some states will not pass you on the visual (I'm running this setup in CA and talked my way through the visual once). In most states it will be fine.
I recommend the duel exhaust, its not to much work and your car looks and sounds so much better. You will also make a tonof power compared to stock. I only had exhaust and put down 187hp and 257ft/lb to the wheel.....good considering the car came stock with 175hp and 245ft/lb at the flywheel.
Here are all the parts I used.
1. Headers= http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku
You can also just buy used '86-'93 stock headers
2. H-pipe= http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy0...p;CatKey=74-01
3. Aftercat= http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/pr...oducts_id=3873I got this setup but in 2.25"
4. Duel Exhaust Hanger Kit= http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy0...p;CatKey=74-01
5. H-pipe Hanger= http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy0...p;CatKey=74-01
6. Duel Hump Trans Crossmember= http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...p?T1=M5059A+01
I went with 2.25" exhaust because I felt like a stock '83 non roller motor didn't need 2.5", I didn't want to hurt my torque.

RE: 83 5.0 exhaust help
I do have a double hump crossmember and headers. I just realized that I dont need cats anymore because of the new emissions law in IL. I found a couple of header-back kits for 79-85 5.0s on Summit. They just dont come with mufflers. What do you guys think?

RE: 83 5.0 exhaust help
That should work....most likely this is not a bolt in kit and it will need to be welded up. Call Hooker and see what is needed. Make sure to ask if it has a cross over pipe. Also thiskit probably doesn't have chrome orstainless steel tips, so you might lose alittle in looks. You will still need the h-pipe hanger and possibly the dual exhaust hanger kit. This would be cool because you can choose any muffler you want.....SLP's Though I don't think you can get them in 2.25". Good Luck!
