It seems I cant advance it too much before the wires from the distributor block the turning of the dizzy due to the coolant hose, can I correct this? I can only get to about 8 or so.

clockwise will advance just in case you did not know. If you cant advance past 8 then that dizzy has been taken out before. To advance from 10 degree's (stock) to 13 or 14 it do's not take much turning.

well yea, I just rebuilt this engine so I put it in, and this is my first time so i'm learning,(thx for the help btw) but I was wondering is there any way I can reset the dizzy where I'll have more turning room (take it out and turn it counter clockwise then put it back in) without having to find the compression stroke again and redoing all of the TDC BS?

I dont know of any other way to do it. Just get your engine back to TDC and stab it kinda of centered so you have plenty of room to rotate. If you have any doubt on how to set it right there is good sticky here explaining it in laymen's terms. If you have any questions after you have tried it, then ask.

pull the dizzy out really slow and as soon as the gear gets past the cam (when the rotor in the dizzy can spin freely) just move it over one tooth and stick it back in. now you should have the room you need to set it right. if you cant get it to seat down ALL the way, once its pushed *most* of the way down you can just turn the motor over and it will seat down in the rest of the way.

i just set mine, i was trying to do it from idle but it wasnt wanting to cooperate so i did it the right way anyways...... hold it @ about 3500 or above and set the total timing where it needs to be, whereever the baseline falls is where it falls. i shot for a total of 35 and we'll see how that does - im sure i can get a degree or two more out of it but thats a good starting place.
