id number on rear end

wheres the id number on the rear end? will this tell me what ring and pinion ratio it has?

Should be a tag on one of the cover bolts and yes.

the first number will either say 2L.... or 3L...... and after that it may have a 73, 08, 27...............the first number is the first part of the ratio and the second number is the other half

the tag will tell you if its a 7.5 or 8.8, open or locking diff, and the gear ratio.
