Default Slipping Auto Transmission

I have a 93' that slips when you first start out, only in first, after that its ok. Now, I've had a few people tell me it is not good to change the fluid and filter on high mileage fords, something about the newer fluids stripping the varnish in the transmission and causeing it to fail. But the fluid is burnt and it needs to be changed. Anyone ever heard of this before?
