What MANUAL 5 speed tranny can I use?
Have an 87 GT with 5.0 speed density....wondering what 5 speed tranny I can use. The synchro's for 1st, 2nd, and reverse are grinding. Moreso 2nd and reverse than 1st. Anyways, don't want to get the tranny rebuilt....just looking for a used one. So what are my options. I used to own a Camaro and I know there were quite a few that were interchangable......still learning about the Ford 5.0's

Either a Borg Warner, or Tremec T5 is a direct swap. Just make sure yo get one from the right year car... I heard early 80s had different input shafts, and I kno for a fact SN95 input shafts are different

Yea I know the T5's are direct swaps. But they are rated for less than 300 lb/ft....the 5.0's make 300 ft/lb stock. So I'm wondering if maybe it would be cost just as much to have the tranny rebuilt with race gears. I can get a rebuilt T5 for what...$600 or so. Not sure how much it would cost to have someone rebuild the tranny for me.

Different T5's are rated at different levels, many at or above 300 ft-lbs. Emperical evidence would indicate that the transmission is much more hearty than the naysayers would have you believe. While the failures get all the press, consider how many modded Mustangs there are that have never had any problems. I've had a T5 do just fine behind a built 351W that dyno'd 394 ft-lb at the rear wheels. Put a good shifter that has positive stops so you don't break the linkage and don't look back. Obviously, slicks and clutch dumping at high RPM may dictate other equipment.
Good luck!

So take this for example... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRESH...spagenameZWDVW He says it is rated for 265 ft/lb....but would it be good enough for my setup? Intake manifold, cold air intake, headers, etc. etc. Pretty much every bolt on and little thing you can have - MSD coil, etc. Dumping the clutch is so much fun though!

reverse will always grind if you just go straight into reverse, you haveto go into a forward gear and then reverse "or5th ex: 3rd to reverse to reverse"and 1st and 2nd could be grinding because you need to adjust the clutch cable just something to check before you go and buy anther trans
