explorer motor rebuild kit
I have a 96 explorer 5.0 block going to use the explorer heads with carb.question is what rebuild kit with pistons and rings standard bore, will work with this set up the guy at "flatlander racing" said only the explorer kit would work because of the gaskets. has anyone used a different rebuild kit on this block why wouldn't a rebuild kit for a 85 5.0 work

RE: explorer motor rebuild kit
if you are using the motor on a mustang set up and the only thing you are using is the long block then the only explorer specific gasket would be the upper intake gasket......you don't need an explorer gasket kit unless the motor is going back in a explorer..you should have gt-40 heads on it...they are junk...send them to mw and I will dispose of them for you as for the rings....I'm not sure if they have SAE rings or metric ones.....later fox mustangs used metric rings...like my 92 had...so order rings based on the application = explorer or find out what they use and order them from summit

RE: explorer motor rebuild kit
thanks for the reply, I need knew pistons in the explorer motor will a rebuild kit for a 85 work summit said no but couldn't tell me why, i'm putting it in a 85 gt the block doesn"t need to be bored, but the 85 block does. i am using the explorer heads on the motor it would be cheaper if i could just get the rebuild kit for the explorer

RE: explorer motor rebuild kit
i'm using the explorer block it had one bad piston but doesn't need boring just honing out. the 85 block has to be bored, thought i could save the boring money for something else and just do a rebuild with the explorer block, crank and rods

RE: explorer motor rebuild kit
hmmm when a van motor I had burned a piston..it etched the wall of the block and imbeded aluminum in the block....we picked it out and honed the snot out of the one cylinder and it worked fine..but for a mustang where performance is desired..I'd bore one of the two blocks unless the explorer block is not that bad where the piston burned.....but I'd bore either one .030.......it's not that expensive to do 100 dollars or so
