Default Trans/First gear question

I've been debating buyin a mustang that (along with some panels needing replaced) has this problem with the tranny.

"Thetransmission "slips" out of first gear if not held in firm. The clutch
engages high on the pedal. Once the cutch is out, it will stay in
first. All of the other gears are fine"

I've been trying to just diagnose this problem (or what it could be) by thinking. I've got a laundry list of problems I think it could be.

Any help/input?

as far as the clutch, if it is adjusted correctly and still grabbing high it is at the end of its life

do you have an after market shifter?? some times the adjustable stop bolt on the shifter backs out & won't allow the transmission to fully enguage a gear.

This is taken directly from a T-5 service manual
Transmission
jumps out of gear:
cause:
Loose transmission or flywheel housing
Bolts, improper alignment
Synchronizer damaged or excessively worn
Blocking ring damaged, worn index slots
Or friction surfaces worn or damaged
Excessive countershaft end play
Shifting fork loose on shaft or rail; worn
Or damaged fork or inserts
Remedy:
Torque bolts to specifications. Realign if
Necessary
Disassemble and check for worn or
Damaged synchronizer parts. Replace
Damaged parts
Disassemble and check blocking ring for
Damaged parts
Disassemble and check. Replace worn or
damaged parts. Reshim if roller bearings
Used.
Disassemble and check for wear or
Damage.

So, from what the T-5 service manual says, if I'm getting the gears changed to 4.10(I'd think it was just the synchro, that was my main guess of the culprit) it probably wouldn't be too expensive to replace the synchros since they're already working on the gears? (I have limited transmission knowledge)

The 4:10 gears would be installed in your rear differential. Thus having nothing to do with your transmission, so it would cost quite a bit extra for the work to be done. Make sure you do not pay a whole lot for a car that needs transmission work, other things will go wrong shortly after like other sinchros, leading to a full rebuild. If your not mechanicly inclined it could get very costly.

Edit..
What body panels are you going to need replaced, have you been sure to check the floorpans throughly?

Hah, see I really know nothing. I had thought synchros tied into the gear teeth...

I believe it's basically the whole driver's side... There's rust below the drivers door, and the back driver's side panel (behind the wheel) is rusted out.

I forgot to ask the floor panels. I have not seen the car in person... only inquired online..

Finding a nice 89-92 5.0 manual seems to be a problem for under 4K!

you are correct and incorrect all at the same time...good for u lol

yes, it is 99% synchro's
yes you need 4.10 gears

gears are rear end ( ring and pinion) and synchro's are in the trans, to refresh requires removal and rebuild of the tranny (at least disassembly, and if you do not replace at that point...your foolish)

a brand new t5 is $1100-$1200 delivered as low as $500 from a local guy

personally ? if you really like the car , try to knock him down $1000 for the bad trans...you'll be splitting w/ him, unless of course he's asking over $4k and/or everything else is not perfect
