Default Timing question

I recently have been experimenting with advancing my timing. I set it a 16* w/(91oct) and I had no pinging in 1st or 2nd @ 5800 rpms, but in 3rd gear around 5600 got just a little pinging. So, i turned it down to 15*w/(91oct) and have had no pingingat all for 2 weeks.Do you guys think 15* is alright or should I set it a 14* to be on the safe side.

See, i have heard that different timing lights can have different readings and that harmonicbalancers can be different from 5.0 to 5.0. So thats why I thought the best way is the set and test method, advancing till it pings and then back off a degree to get the most potential of a timing advance for YOUR vehicle.

You're right about the test and set. Me personally I like to be a little on the safe side. My 87 is set to 12* I just advance 2* over factory specs.

I had mine at 12*(89 oct) for 1 week, then 14*(91 oct) for 1 week. Now i've been at 15* for 2 weeks. Yea, I know what you mean by being safe cause I'd hate to **** something up from the timing being advance 1* to much. You know 15* is working right now, but its 62 degrees in Arizona right now, i'll probally ping when it 110 degrees here in AZ.

Stock on a 5.0 is 10*, most run at 12* for safety, economy (as much as possible) and advancing it will make it run quicker, but too much and you'll have problems.
