When I push the clutch in the pedal goes in part ways and then when it's almost all the way down "POP!" and the clutch pedal becomes loose. I can re-engage it by pulling up on the clutch pedal. then the same thing happens when I push the pedal down again. what could be the problem? '87 5.0.

I've removed the clutch quadrant and the clutch cable from the firewall and the clutch cable has play. I can move it back and forth with little effort. Hope this helps.

you still have that plastic qaudrant... could be the culprit thats what it sounds like........

but even after taking it out there is play in the clutch cable. is this normal? I thought the cable was supposed to be tight. I can move the steel braided cable back and forth easily. I haven't put the new aluminum quadrant back in 'cuz I don't have an adjustable cable or the firewall adjuster.

1) can I putthe quadrantback in w/o any adjustment (cable or firewall)?
2) isn't the clutch cable supposed to be tight (with no play)? - I didn't disconnect it from the clutch or bellhousing.
