Could be...when you drain your dark fluid, look for flakes at the bottom of the pan or in the drained fluid. If you find some, I'd start getting worried. A little bit of 'sediment' is normal, flakes are not, they are from your bands.

If it's already slipping it's on it's way out.

were you running an aftermarket trans. cooler? the stock one really isn't enough, especially in hot weather and stop and go traffic.

the auto..should never be with out a cooler.. I don't even use the rad to cool the trans..think about it a good engine over heating mean the good ole trans isn't far behind ..

I would still go through the radiator and then route the trans lines to the external cooler. I think your losing some cooling potetial if you don't do it that way. You are making the only outlet for heat the external cooler which isn't made to be the primary heat sink. The cool side of the radiator, which is where the heat exchanger for the trans is located, runs at about 120 to 160 degrees. The trans fluid routinely goes well over 200 degrees so there is a lot of cooling that can take place. In the case of the engine overheating it depends. If the thermostat sticks then the cool side of the radiator will still be relatively cool. You can't drive far overheating so the trans shouldn't be affected. You definitely will get better cooling to the trans if you keep the stock in radiator connected and then add an external as well.
