Axle Splines Good or Bad????

Axle Splines Good or Bad????
I have been having a grinding noise comming somewhere from the rear of the car. I pulled the right axle out today and this is what the splines look like. The splines don't look like they have been slipping and grinding away but they do have these grooves that run perpendicular to them all the way down the splines. Is that what they are supposed to look like? The splines in the rear end have no damage to them.Sorry for the blurry pic but you can still see the grooves I am curious about.

RE: Axle Splines Good or Bad????
K thanks. Then I know that my rear isn't making the noise. Would my U joints make grinding noises under hard part throttle like taking off from a light or a hard shift into 2nd? (c5 tranny) But have no visible slack or excess movement?

you could have a needle bearing that may have fallen down in the cap upon assembley and may not exibit play but bind...remove driveshaft and feel joints looking for notchy or binding joints
