advance timing

RE: advance timing
it is easy, hook up the timing gun to #1 plug wire, hook the power for the gun up, after removing the spout plug right next to the distributor, and loosening the distributor hold down screw, you can still leave it tight, you just need enough slack to turn the distributor.
start the car, and turn on the light, point it at the crank, and when it flashes the pointer over the harmonic balancer will point to what the timing is set at.
there should be some timing marks like this. 10-0-10-20-30
and there will be some lines between the #s.
start at 12degrees and move up a little at a time, some engines can handle 16-20 degrees timing, it all depends on how old your timing set is and if your balancer slipped.
my old balancer had a bad wobble to it, and I could advance the timing to 22 degrees with no detonation.
now it detonates at 15 degrees.
hope this helps.
