Default Shifting Problems

before u go spending all that money, have it checked by a mechanic (other than the dealership) that does free estimates. i'm betting it is either your pressure plate or clutch fork. i just went through that and i replaced the cable $21.99 from auto zone and then had the clutch fork and pressure plate replaced. total cost $521.99

I have to agree with 9150 here... go get the transmission checked -- by two mechanics unless you have one who you can really trust. If the cost to repair the transmission exceeds $1k, just put a new transmission in. It really does sound to me like your 2nd gear synchro is going bad, which is the most common gear to have that happen to since it really get the crap beatten out of it.

While I would agree to have it checked before you have it replace (which a tranny shop would do before they worked on it anyways), the a worn clutch cable / quadrant / fork / flywheel is not very likely, as it doesnt do the grind in all your gears. In addition, a cable / quadrant problem usually gets worse as you drive the car more, often times it wont grind at all for the first few shifts, then it gets worse.

Where nostang at? Isnt this his are of expertise?
