Default timing question

i was adjusting my timing and i read an tech article that i have to remove the spout connector. Ok so i remove it and set my timing to 12 degrees then when i put the spout connector back on and check timing again its like the timing goes up to like 20 degrees but then i remove it and check and its back at where i left it at. Is this normal that it goes up when i connect spout back on .Do i have to adjust it with spout connector on and move dist and put timing where i want it or the other way
