Default Starter Noise

Ok so I have an 88 and I put starter in for a 93 so I would have the mini starter. But the starter is so loud!!! I tried shimming it and it got a little better but its still not right. I have had the starter tested at pepboys and it passed. Any ideas????

you should not ever have to shim a fox starter......either the teeth on the flywheel have an issue but if with old starter you never had the issue then it is a starter prob.....is the starter new or reman?? or used but new to you??..and having pep girls test it means nothing!! all they test it for is operation...if the bendix or armeture has an issue when a load is placed on it ..their test will never confirm it

Well I never had the problem before when I had the big starter. The starter is brand new. I had a brand new one in it before but I took it back because of the problem and they gave me another one but im still having the same problem. My flywheel is used, could that be the problem?

depends on the teeth if they are worn on the flywheel..also depends on the noise you hear...very hard for me to interpret the type of noise you hear so I can diagnosis what it may be??

I know that this would be bad if I did but could I have put an automatic flywheel in there and the starter is not engaging correctly?
