clutch cable stretched?
earlier today i couldnt get my car into gear. pull the fork cover off and there is TONS of slack in the cable.. atleast an inch.
had the shop mechanic check it out and he says my TO bearing is toast and the fork itself has about an inch of play.
of course, the cable is stretched now and the only one available is the same one thats in it.. a $20 autozone cheapie.
so instead of dropping $20 on a new cable, i took a trip to the hardware store and bought 3 cable clamps, the kind you'd find in your backyard for your dogs leash or clothes-line. it worked!
untill i got home... im pulling into my driveway (neighbors left me 4 feet of space, how kind..) and i go to block my wheels (no ebrake, on incline) and i cant get it out of reverse. i push up on the pedal trying to get the self-adjuster to work.. nothing. i pull up on the pedal and instantly floored it and forced it into neutral.
so basicaly i need to figure out what's going on. this car is my DD and i cant wait/afford/install aftermarket stuff yet. im convinced the self-adjusting mechanism is trash since pulling up on the pedal doesnt do anything. i can see the teeth on the pawl almost engaging but theres no way to get it any higher. even when i installed the new cable, it barely grabbed right at the floor which i found odd but not surprising seeing how it is a $20 autozone cable.
how can i test the self adjuster and clutch fork? and dosnt the TO make a whining sound when its bad?

RE: clutch cable stretched?
just ordered all adjustable stuff from summit.
overnighted for saturday morning because i need this car moving asap...
once this is installed and i arrange a secondary vehicle, ill be replacing the transmission, flywheel, clutch, and throw-out bearing. does anyone have a transmission removal/installation tutorial or website handy?

RE: clutch cable stretched?
pretty simple. take the cable out of the fork, take the speedo cable out, undo the electrical, undo the DS from the rear, remove the bolts holding the bell to the block and finally the mount, and your out.
dont forget the shifter handle either.

RE: clutch cable stretched?
its very easy. my friend and i had a lift, a 87 fox with a t5, and after he blew his 3rd tranny we could switch out a t5 in under an hour. thats only the tranny tho not the bellhousing, clutch.
