Default Speedometer cable question

I've got an 86 LX 5.0 manual, the speedometer cable is trashed. Before I put the tranny back in the car, I am going to order a new speedometer cable, but here's my question. Will the new cable thread directly into the transmission or do I still need a speed sensor to plug into the transmission and thread the cable into the sensor? The car is carbed so I don't have any engine computer for the speed sensor signal to go to.

On my 86. It did not have a sensor. It went from the trans straight to the cluster.

you should have a drive assembley made onto one end of the cable in which a ger slides onto and is held on by a clip

I emailed the guys at Latemodelrestoration and they said the models w/o cruise control have a cable that threads into the transmission, the ones with cruise control have what you're talking about mjr46.
