fire problem this afternoon- "Altenator"

Default fire problem this afternoon- "Altenator"

well headed home from work and i smell something burnin so i pull over to check it out. I get out and look and dont see a thing.. so I continue home.. when i get home i check it out and nothin so i go in the hourse about ten mins later I check just to see my go has smoke comin from under the hood.. I open it and my altenator is on fire the wires and everything so i get it out with water and undo the battery... Does anyone have a clue why this would happen

Yeah I do. It happened to me last year and if I had not been right there the car would have burned up. There was another person on this site who posted pictures of his burned up GT that caught fire in the driveway one night after he had gone in the house and went to bed. the problem is with the connector. I fixed mine by upgrading to a one wire alternator.

Yes I can tell you exactlly why it happened, Ford put out a TSB years ago on this very issue and when you buy a new alternator or reman one it should come with a harness repair end, the Tsb stated the connector was prone to overheating and causing what just happened to you, so now you'll have to perform the upgrade to harness end and need a new alt
