Unhappy timing cover 302

on the timing cover why is there a little chip on the bottom of the lip where the water pump mounts?when i put on my water pump i got little drips from it am i supposed to put something there? please help!

The water pump is only sealed to the cover at the water passages on each side. That area of the front cover behind the pump is a dry area. The little groove at the bottom is to allow water to drain out.

If you look at the back of the water pump, you'll there's a plate over the impellers. That plate has a gasket. Sometimes that gasket leaks. Or maybe you didn't seal around the passages well enough.

if you are getting drips from there then it is from the ports where it bolts to the block on cover seeping out and running down and out that hole or it is the backing plate on the pump, pressure test cooling system and clean down area and verify leak location
